More about Wavecraft

I have been permanently based in Cornwall since 1998 starting a career in countryside management and nature conservation that ultimately lasted 25 years.  My background before then was always creative having attended art college and worked as a graphic designer for several years. The change in career led me to Cornwall and a rekindling of my art and design passions...but this time away from the drawing desk - instead, in my spare time, immersing myself in nature and more hands-on working with tools, wood and other materials. The source for these materials was Cornwall's incredible coast with a passion for beachcombing that became a lifelong pursuit. 

I relished exploring countless beaches and coves to hunt for materials. The wonderful colours and textures given to the flotsam and jetsam, be it wood, metal, rope or plastic displayed an intrinsic beauty through exposure to the waves, salt, sand, rocks and sun. The items I created allowed the stories behind my finds to show through - wood bleached and hardened with the weather & age, layers of worn paint, old nail holes, cavities and holes bored by marine creatures, faded letters or logos... All these qualities added character and the materials cost the planet nothing in putting them to good and creative use.

 

And so, 30 years on, I still enjoy the beachcombing and the collecting and the making. The environmental messages regarding sustainability - Reduce, Reuse, Recycle - have never been more pertinent and affect us all. I take pride in following this mantra as much as possible and this includes in my creative work. I seek out and take opportunities to use reclaimed or salvaged materials as much as possible.  My work has developed, adapted and moved on over time becoming more refined and tailored to clients needs, accommodating spirit of place as well as functional need. The media lends itself to individuality and inspires spontaneity and uniqueness in design. Above all my work hopes to demonstrate that art, and contemporary design can come from the imaginative use of unwanted or discarded items.
